A grizzly bear attacked a group of students, injuring 11, in the town of Bella Coola, IN Canada. The animal is currently still at large, so local authorities advise residents to stay indoors until the animal can be found.
What has happened?
The incident occurred yesterday afternoon, Thursday 20 November, along the highway in the city of Bella Coola, province of British Columbia. Some students were hit by bear spray as teachers tried to fight off the animal, Veronica Schooner, the mother of the children present, told The Canadian Press. One student said he heard the bear running very close to him but “it was actually chasing someone else.”
The injured one
British Columbia Emergency Health Services said that of the 11 injured victims, two had serious injuries, while seven others were treated at the scene.
The group of students came from the Acwsalcta School, run by the indigenous Nuxalk tribe, in the city located 700 km (435 miles) northwest of Vancouver. At this time the animal has not been captured, therefore they recommend staying “at home and away from roads”. State officials temporarily closed the school, offering counseling services.
