The Municipality of Valencia informed the Prosecutor’s Office of the existence of a possible illegal dog breeder in a house in the Quatre Carreres neighbourhood, in whose kitchen 16 dogs of different breeds were found, including 10 poodles and 2 Yorkshires, after a neighbor had reported odor problems.
The Animal Protection Office confirmed that the address did not correspond to any group and carried out an inspection together with the Local Police, although in an initial inspection no one was identified in the house but the owner was contacted by telephone who arranged a meeting for the following day.
Both the local police officers and the veterinarians verified the strong odor emanating from the house with the door closed, and once they entered the house the odor was stronger and they observed that there was urine and excrement on the floor, as well as a strong smell of bleach.
In the house, about 80 square metres, a large number of bags of dog food were piled up, and in the kitchen they found 16 dogs, two of which were in cages because they were in heat, even though there were cages in all the rooms.
As reported last Sunday by municipal sources, the house was not in adequate sanitary conditions for the stay of people or animals and was full of flies.
At first glance, the animals’ health condition was good, but their paws were dirty and wet because they urinated on the floor of the house. The owner of the dogs explained to the officers that she did not have a zoo license but showed her breeder’s license on her cell phone.
When the pet identification register was consulted, it was found that she had 22 dogs under her name, even though there were only 16 in the house. She said the others were living at a friend’s chalet, but refused to give officers details of the address and location.
Veterinarians took the dogs to the Benimàmet center, where they underwent an initial veterinary health assessment and all but two of them had chips checked.
