China has inaugurated the world’s highest pumped storage power plant in Zhenjiang/Jurong in the Yangtze River basin. The structure, built in a short time, was intended to transmit large amounts of energy to the national electricity grid.
The facility rises 182.3 meters above the ground without using natural heights, as “El Espanol” reports. Construction began in 2017 and was completed in October 2025. The giant construction was realized with a budget of 1.3 billion euros and boasts a total output of 1.35 gigawatts.
China opened the world’s highest pumped storage power plant and targets CO2 neutral energy production by 2060
By using a water pump between the high and low storage tanks, this system acts like a giant natural battery. According to information from “El Espanol”, it can produce 1.35 billion kWh of energy annually.
The system is optimized for periods of low and high energy demand and helps store excess energy from renewable sources. China targets CO2 neutral energy production by 2060.
600 meters above the river: The world’s highest bridge opens in China
After more than three years of construction, the world’s tallest bridge in China has just opened to traffic. According to state news agency Xinhua, the “Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge” measures 625 meters from the river bed to the highway. It leads to the Huajiang Gorge in the mountains of southern China’s Guizhou Province. This means that the bridge is approximately the same height as the Shanghai Tower, the tallest skyscraper in China.
The journey across the 1,420 meter long suspension bridge only takes a few minutes. Previously, the travel time to both sides of the Huajiang Gorge was about two hours.
