«My speech was slaughtered, I was forced to do it»

President of the United States Donald Trump said he had an “obligation” to sue BBC about how parts of his speech on January 6 2021 were edited into a documentary by the British broadcaster. He wrote it himself BBCciting a Fox News interview in which Trump he said his speech was “butchered” and the way it was delivered “deceived” viewers.

This is the first time Trump has spoken publicly on the issue since his lawyers wrote to the BBC, announcing demands for $1 billion in damages unless the broadcaster recanted, apologized and compensated.

Trump will sue the BBC

Trump’s interview with Fox News was taped on Monday, although the BBC segment was only released yesterday evening.

Speaking on Fox News’ ‘The Ingraham Angle’, the president was asked if he would pursue the lawsuit, to which he responded, “Well, I guess I should, you know, why not, because they deceived the public and they admitted it.” Trump continued, “They actually edited my speech on January 6th, which was a beautiful speech, a very compelling speech, and they made it sound radical. And they completely changed it. What they did was extraordinary.”

Trump’s words

When asked if he would pursue legal action, he replied: “I think I have an obligation to do that, because you can’t convince people, you can’t allow people to do things like that.” BBC president Samir Shah has apologized for what he called an “error of judgement” regarding the editing. The BBC recalled receiving a letter from Trump’s lawyers on Sunday. The lawyer’s letter sets a deadline of 10pm on Friday (London time, 11pm in Italy) for the British company’s response. The BBC said it would respond “in due course”.
