More than 175 kilograms of cocaine were seized at the port of Gioia Tauro – Il Tempo


REGGIO CALABRIA (ITALPRESS) – Reggio Calabria Provincial Financial Police Command, together with the Gioia Tauro Office of Customs and Monopolieshe caught in the Port of Gioia Tauro, a quantity of highly pure cocaine weighing more than 175 kilograms.

The operation should be framed within a more complex and articulated intervention plan prepared throughout the Gioia port area, with the intensification of inspections and controls, with the aim of identifying, among the thousands of containers moved every day, containers used by criminal groups to hide narcotics.

In particular, soldiers of the Gioia Tauro Group and staff of the Customs Agency, as part of an inspection of the local port terminal area, aimed at intercepting any cargo of narcotic substances imported by organized crime, selected and carried out a careful inspection of three containers, two of which came from Latin America and were destined for Italy and Eastern European countries, carrying frozen octopus and shrimp respectively.

In particular, blocked containers first undergo in-depth x-ray scanning, using advanced scanning equipment supplied to the Customs and Monopolies Agency, and are then thoroughly inspected with the help of the canine unit of the Guardia di Finanza Gioia Tauro Group.

At the end of the inspection, 154 blocks of cocaine were discovered and confiscated, with a total weight of more than 175 kilograms, which were cleverly hidden in containers, in an attempt to overcome the penetration of customs and police checks carried out systematically in the port area of ​​Gioia Tauro. The seized cocaine could generate huge revenues for criminal organizations, estimated at around 30 million euros.
