Konstantin Wecker no longer uses illegal drugs and alcohol no longer plays a role for him. However, he didn’t want to miss out on some experiences.
Although songwriter Konstantin Wecker now lives a drug-free life, he still looks back fondly on many drug experiences. The 78 year old musician said this in his interview with “Augsburger Allgemeine”.
Wecker said he really enjoyed taking LSD. But that’s not enough. “Other experiences were also exciting. I once consumed magic mushrooms in Bali, which is allowed there. The Rolling Stones, I think, were there at the same time and then wrote ‘Sympathy for the Devil’,” Wecker also reported.
He said he “still has a soft spot for those who fail,” adding: “I would always rather talk to bums than people who look perfect.” But he can’t say what his life would be like without drugs. “I don’t know. But I know that it’s basically okay. Because in this life you make mistakes.”
Konstantin Wecker is now drug free and has not drunk alcohol for four years. It wasn’t easy for him to live without the latter, as he explained. “The problem with legal drugs is that it’s very difficult to admit to yourself that you’re an alcoholic. For me, that took decades,” Wecker said.
Konstantin Wecker just canceled all concerts of his current tour in November due to illness. The background is his neurological disease. This was caused by decades of alcohol consumption, which meant he could barely play the piano anymore, as he had announced in the summer. Now he says: “Nobody has been able to tell me what it is. So I have a neurological disease that I don’t even know what it’s called. But I don’t want to complain.” Even so, he really missed composing and meditating in front of the piano. “I tried to process this loss spiritually. For example, I asked myself why this affected me,” Wecker said.
