Hamburg residents can determine their flood risk online. This new portal provides real-world action recommendations for homeowners in just a few clicks.
The City of Hamburg has released a digital “flood prevention guide” that provides citizens with specific information about the risk of flooding where they live.
Environment Senator Katharina Fegebank (Green Party) explained on Wednesday that the new signs not only provide information about whether a property is potentially affected by flooding, but also provide direct practical recommendations for taking action.
Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent due to climate change and are making flood risk assessments more difficult, Fegebank continued. This portal is intended to help communities prepare specifically for the possibility of flooding due to heavy rain, rising groundwater and floods.
The system works simply: After entering an address and answering four short questions, users receive a report containing the potential for flooding on their property and the maximum water depth. In addition, the portal provides recommendations for structural and organizational flood prevention measures.
