27 degrees in Biarritz, 21 in Bordeaux, 19 in Lyon or almost 30 in Trois-Villes, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques: very cool temperatures on Wednesday 12 November. If some French people take advantage of the terrace; nature is completely disorienting.

In the Arcachon (Gironde) basin, there were no problems entering the water on the afternoon of Wednesday 12 November.”It provides many benefits for the body, mind and everything.”rejoice a swimmer. Up to 21 degrees were recorded on the thermometer, enough to please tourists. “That’s good. Me, I sign until tomorrow every year for that“, a man laughed.”Here we are in November, we have the impression of towards the end of summer, but definitely not autumn“, added a woman.

A wave of unusual mildness occurred across France: almost 30 degrees at the foot of the Pyrenees Mountains, almost 15 degrees higher than usual, and 20 degrees was recorded in Toulouse (Haute-Garonne). Softness even increased north of the Loire with 18 degrees in Tours (Indre-et-Loire), or 7 degrees higher than normal.

The moderate temperatures are caused by a depression off the Atlantic coast, which brings air from Morocco and Spain, air that is getting warmer with global warming. “If I refer to my childhood or adolescence in the 70s and 80s, it would be almost impossible for the temperature to be this high. But today, extraordinary temperature properties are becoming normal in a climate warming due to human influence.”explains Christophe Cassou, climatologist at the École normale supérieure.

The warmer climate has hurt farmers’ yields. Matthieu Badillé is a market gardener near Tours. This year, 30% of the turnips could not be sold because they were infested with fly larvae: “Flies occur naturally in nature. That’s every year. (But) there are more of them than usual, of course because of the cool autumn weather this year.”

On the neighboring plot, the cabbage grew well, even a little too well. They risk maturing quickly and not finding buyers in the market. ““If when they’re ready to pick, the weather is still cool like this… We don’t want to eat cabbage when it’s 20 degrees.”said the market gardener. The weather will be warmer again on Thursday. The wave of softness is expected to last until Saturday.
