A cell drama. A 28-year-old man died on the night of Wednesday to Thursday in a fire in his cell at the Rennes-Vezin (Ille-et-Vilaine) prison center, the prison administration told Le Parisien, confirming information from Ouest-France.

According to the Grand-Ouest Interregional Prison Service Directorate, cited by Ouest-France, the fire was “voluntarily caused” by the victim occupying his cell “alone”.

“Prison staff, equipped with breathing apparatus, intervened to remove him from his cell and carried out first aid procedures, measures later taken by firefighters after they arrived. However, Samu’s doctor had to pronounce him dead,” the same source explained to Ouest-France.

No officers were injured

According to Rennes news, 20 firefighters were deployed for this intervention until 5 am, but emergency services were unable to resuscitate the prisoner.
