US lags behind: Trump’s cuts undermine American science

Economic dependence: America threatens to do nothing without Chinese raw materials
The People’s Republic of China produces 70 percent of the rare earth metals used globally, and a total of 90 percent of all minerals mined worldwide are processed in China. The US must learn the hard way what it means if China turns off the water taps here. Then production lines in America ground to a halt because everything from refrigerators to cars required semiconductor chips that couldn’t be produced without rare earths.
