“It’s about everyone getting checked”

Spahn was the first to speak at this morning’s presentation. He said: “It’s about everyone being screened, recorded, written about – and then we also know: Where are our options?”

And further: “By the way, this means that military service can be discussed among society, in every family. We will make voluntary service even more attractive.” He talks about 700,000 letters collected annually, including girls as young as 18 (and roughly rounded up).

▶︎ The fact is: In the future, all 18-year-old men will have to undergo military service under the name “Compulsory Military Service”. If too few people volunteer for military service, many decide who to recruit as extras. Military service generally must last six months, including three months of basic training.

▶︎ Boris Pistorius satisfied with the arrangements that have now been found. Other countries, especially in Northern Europe, show that the principle of voluntarism works. Future military service will be interesting: Pistorius highlights the gross salary of 2,600 euros for conscripts and the federal government’s contribution to the cost of a driver’s license if you commit for the long term. It all constitutes a “complete and attractive package,” Pistorius said.
