BBC apologizes to Trump but refuses to compensate him financially for his mistake | International

Last Thursday, the BBC attempted the difficult balance of trying to be conciliatory to Donald Trump without bowing to all his demands. The public body has apologized to the American president for the mistake made in the documentary broadcast a year ago, in which a speech by the dignitary was edited in a misleading way, but the body refuses to financially compensate Trump for the error.

“Lawyers for the BBC have written to President Trump’s legal team in response to the letter received last Sunday. BBC President Shamir Shah has separately sent a personal letter to the White House making it clear to President Trump that he and the corporation regret the editing of the President’s speech from January 6, 2021, which appeared on the program (Panorama). The BBC has no plans to rebroadcast the documentary ‘Trump: A Second Chance?’ on any of its platforms,” a company spokesperson said. “Whilst the BBC regrets the way in which the speech cuts were edited, it completely rejects that there is any basis for legal action for defamation,” it adds.
