In Berlin, teachers discuss AI in schools. What roles should be played in the classroom? How can students and teachers benefit from this? There are lots of ideas.
Friday afternoon at Kiezlab Friedrichshain, basically eight o’clock. The room was too hot, the air was stale, but about two hundred teachers were on duty. “AI Summit” addresses important questions: What role can and should AI play in teaching?
Teachers from several states exchanged ideas, listened to and gave keynote speeches, called “Lightning Talks,” took part in workshops and networking. This event was organized by Diana Knodel. He is the managing director of the “App Camps” initiative and the company fobizz, a company that works with several states and provides AI tools for teachers.
The main idea of the event is for teachers to inspire, support and encourage each other in using AI, Knodel said. They want to create space for that.
subject “Learning with AI”
One of the biggest problems is that many teachers are reluctant to respond to these new challenges. Some people have no idea what exactly AI should bring to teaching or preparation. Others refuse because they have so much to do.
Against this background, the experience of Berlin teacher Meike Howein is particularly interesting. He created an elective subject “LeKI” in his high school: “Learning with AI”. Howein suggested this to his school’s administration, and he was convinced.
Many cover the basics of AI, intended to allow students to handle the topic more competently: What exactly is an algorithm? How does learning with neural networks work? What does it mean for an AI to hallucinate? What impact has AI already felt?
Don’t try to make it perfect
In the discussion which will also be broadcast live on a podcast, Sofia, Howein’s student, enthusiastically shared her experiences in class. He really enjoyed being able to try things on his own.
Meike Howein sees herself as a source of inspiration for other teachers. Maybe they can use their experience to encourage some people to try something, he hopes. You shouldn’t expect to make it perfect from the start.
Telli chatbot is available in more federal states
Just try it – but how? For example, with the Telli chatbot. It was developed by FWU, the state’s joint media agency. Teachers can use telli to help them prepare lessons, for example.
Students can also use telli. With fictional interlocutors, they can develop or deepen topics interactively and independently. In this way, for example, different levels of learning can be taken into account more easily.
telli is already available in schools in Bremen, Brandenburg, Baden-Württemberg and Hesse, and since November 10 also in Schleswig-Holstein. The Minister of Education there, Doris Stenke (CDU), said that this would provide schools with modern tools that could lighten their burden in everyday school life and at the same time encourage critical and constructive use of AI in learning.
The question is how often telli is used. AI experts describe it more as a basic version.
Further developments are planned
But the chatbot story is just the beginning. This week, FWU selected a consortium to develop an “adaptive intelligent system” (AIS) on behalf of 16 states — a digital product intended to provide individualized support to students in their learning.
The first version of AIS will be available for one grade level, two subjects, and two school types in December 2026. This development is being funded through DigitalPakt School.
“More trust in school”
The AI Summit on Friday afternoon was coming to an end. As a small example, he shows how teachers want to continue their training in their free time to stay up to date.
AI is now relevant in all areas of schooling, says organizer Diana Knodel. It is important to make this more visible. He hopes that more events like this can be held.
