According to SPD lawmaker Bettina Hagedorn, the German Bundestag budget committee has decided that the tax reduction for sailing on the Kiel Canal will be extended. The federal government initially halved the levy in 2023 over three years. According to Hagedorn, homeowners have now decided to extend the regulations indefinitely after June 2026.

Hagedorn pointed to the damage to the embankment, construction work to widen the eastern curve and the current speed limit.

Speed limits imposed due to erosion damage to embankments will lead to longer transit times and thus increase the salaries of pilots and canal supervisors, explained the Federal Ministry of Transport in 2023. By reducing traffic taxes, the federal government will cover additional costs. At the time, the ministry also referred to the additional economic burden resulting from the war in Ukraine.
