Children from Germany die while on holiday in Türkiye

A family living in Germany was on holiday in Turkey and ate, among other things, shellfish from a street vendor. A three-year-old child and a six-year-old child died.
Two children aged three and six years died in a hospital in Istanbul. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they are German citizens. As Türkiye’s Health Ministry announced on Thursday, his parents will continue to be treated in the intensive care unit.
An investigation has begun, explained a ministry representative on the online service X. There was food poisoning in the room. Police are currently evaluating the hotel’s surveillance cameras and have interviewed witnesses.
According to media reports, the family was from Hamburg and was on holiday in Türkiye. TV station NTV reported that the family had been in Istanbul since November 9. On Tuesday, the family visited the Ortaköy entertainment district in Beşiktaş district. The family bought shellfish from street vendors, among other things, and ate chicken and sucuk at restaurants.
According to the television station, the family fell ill on Tuesday and went to the hospital, but were allowed to go home. The mother later found her daughter motionless in the hotel. The family members were taken to hospital again on Wednesday by medical teams. Children died there.
The condition of the parents also appears to be very bad: the children’s father was intubated, NTV reported.
