Billie Eilish (Los Angeles, 23 years old) is an artist attentive to social and environmental causes. He proves it every chance he gets. For example, on October 29, while receiving the Innovation Award from the magazine Wall Street Journalthe singer denounced the economic inequality that exists in the world and urged billionaires to share their wealth with those who need it most. Two weeks after that moment, which quickly went viral on social media, the nine-time Grammy winner once again spoke out publicly against a billionaire, and she did so against one in particular: Elon Musk.
It was through his Instagram profile, where Ellish accumulates 124 million followers. The reason? The owner of This Thursday, Eilish shared a series of stories in which he reposted a My Voice My Choice post about what the entrepreneur can do with all that money.
“End famine. Musk could spend $40 billion to end famine by 2030 or provide safe, universal drinking water to 140 billion people around the planet in the next seven years,” is the first of the proposals. “Save species in danger of extinction. To save 100,444 species, Musk could pay between 1,000 and 2,000 million per year so that they are no longer all in danger of extinction,” is another point. And the last one is “rebuild Gaza”: “If I wanted to spread the wealth and help even more, I could also rebuild Ukraine and Syria at a cost of $793.2 billion.” Other proposals from My Voice My Choice, which he did not republish, are: curing diseases and ending maternal deaths. In the latest of this social movement’s publications, Musk appears doing the Nazi salute and a message: “What he does instead”, referring to the fact that he does not donate money to any of the causes mentioned above.
After posting these images, Eilish shared her opinion on Musk, calling him a “fucking pathetic cowardly dog.” It is the last to be pointed out by the singer.
At the event organized by Wall Street Journal, Among the millionaires who listened to his speech were Mark Zuckerberg, Hailey Bieber, George Lucas and Karlie Kloss. “We live in a very difficult and dark time, and people need help more than ever. If you have money, I advise you to use it for good causes, perhaps to help those in need,” he urged. But he didn’t stop there: “I love you all, but here there are those who have much more money than me. If they are billionaires, why are they? No offense, but yes, give away your money.” Before the speech, presenter Stephen Colbert shared news that confirms Eilish’s commitment to helping those most in need: the artist will donate 11.5 million dollars, raised during her tour Hit me hard and softto support initiatives focused on food equity, climate justice and reducing carbon pollution.
This donation adds to the many causes she has promoted as she is an internationally recognized figure, as well as one of the most listened to artists: she has participated in sustainability campaigns in fashion and collaborated with non-profit organizations focused on plastic waste.
The singer wanted her tour of over 100 concerts to be as sustainable as possible. To do this, it has implemented practices such as biodegradable confetti and merchandising made with recycled cotton. “You can do pretty much the same thing with sustainable materials, but people don’t do it. The most important thing I’ve learned from working with so many companies and creating my own products and perfumes is that anyone can do it. Most people just don’t do it,” she explained in an interview with Wall Street Journalthe.
