Anna Maria Panzera, grandmother of the newborn found dead on May 26, 2024 at Villa San Giovanni, was sentenced to life in prison. The decision was handed down by the Assizes Court of Reggio Calabria, which granted the request of the public prosecutor, Tommaso Pozzati, investigation coordinator together with Deputy Prosecutor Walter Ignazitto. The woman was accused of the crime of infanticide.
Horrifying discovery in May 2024
The child’s body was inside a backpack left among the rocks of Villa San Giovanni, Reggio Calabria province, near the area used for boarding the ferry. The grisly discovery was made by a fisherman who found the backpack, opened it and discovered the corpse of a newborn baby with an umbilical cord wrapped around its neck.
According to investigations, the woman acted immediately after giving birth to her 13-year-old daughter, who was suffering from mental deficiency. From the examination, Panzera allegedly hid the newborn baby, still with the umbilical cord attached, in a backpack and then left it on a cliff near the seashore.
