Ismea reported that food purchases grew significantly in the first half of this year

Fresh vegetable volumes increased by 4.9%, as did eggs (+7.5%), fresh fish (+3.7%), fresh cheese (+5.3%) and bread (+4.9%). These are some of the data contained in the Ismea food consumption report regarding the first half of 2025. The report highlights the growth in purchases by Italian families for domestic food consumption compared to the same period the previous year. Results that confirm the vitality of the internal market and provide positive signals, also thanks to the increase in purchase volumes of many key food products.

In all regions, higher purchasing frequency was recorded (+10% annually), which is a sign of increasing consumer confidence and a trend towards more constant domestic consumption. Supermarkets established themselves as a reference channel for food purchases, with a market share of 41% and an increase of 6.1%, followed by discount stores and hypermarkets.

Overall, the first half of 2025 presents a picture of strengthening food consumption and particular vitality for fresh products, which are once again the main choice of Italians, reflecting the increasing attention to the quality, health and sustainability of daily nutrition.
