In a number of German cities, hundreds of people took to the streets to demonstrate demanding stronger climate protection. Fridays for the Future has called for protests in more than 70 locations. The event was the UN climate conference in Belem, Brazil.
According to consistent information from Fridays for Future and the police, around 1,000 people took part in Hamburg. According to organizers, there were about 3,000 people in Cologne and about 700 people in Dresden and Munich. Berlin
According to police reports, at least 450 demonstrators gathered in front of the Brandenburg Gate; then there was talk of about 600 people. The committee said 2,000 participants.
This movement criticizes the German government for not acting firmly enough on international climate protection and continuing to support fossil fuels.
Neubauer criticizes “gifts to airlines”
In Berlin, protesters displayed LED signs reading “Keep Your Promise.” Other signs carried slogans such as “With passion for the future in climate protection.” Climate activist Luisa Neubauer was announced as the speaker. Also in Hamburg spoke several speakers. According to organizers, lantern parades are planned in many places after the demonstration.
“Emissions will increase again in 2025, and the planet will become uninhabitable,” climate activist Luisa Neubauer told the dpa news agency in Berlin. “Germany has taken the role of the irresponsible party in global efforts to combat the existing climate crisis.” Additionally, Neubauer at RBB criticized the federal government’s announcement that it would repeal the air traffic ticket tax increase decided by the traffic light coalition. Neubauer spoke of a “gift to the airlines.”
Carla Reemtsma, who attended the Climate Conference (COP) in Belém, Brazil on Fridays for Future, said: “Instead of continuing to invest in dirty gas, the federal government should advocate for the phase-out of fossil fuels at the COP and ultimately strengthen climate finance.”
