Defusing plan: Bomb discovered in Nuremberg – 21,000 people evacuated

Before the plane bomb defusing plan came in Nuremberg Large-scale evacuations have begun. The city government announced that road closures were required within a radius of 800 meters. Up to 21,000 residents had to leave their apartments and houses. It was the largest evacuation operation to date required in Nuremberg following the discovery of a World War II bomb.

The bomb, which weighs around 450 kilograms, was discovered on Avenariusstrasse in the Großreuth district during construction work. The city government said defusing should begin when the evacuation is complete.

Hundreds of emergency services on site

Police have closed the first roads in the affected area from 7.30pm. Vehicles with loudspeakers passed through the area to provide information to residents.

Shuttle buses took those affected to the school center on Berliner Platz, where a treatment center was being set up. However, emergency services also asked residents to leave their apartments first if possible and stay with relatives or friends.

According to the city government, bomb experts and hundreds of emergency services were at the scene during the night: a total of almost 500 firefighters, around 250 helpers from the emergency services, 60 THW staff and more than 100 police officers.
