Never again without a ski helmet, the obligation applies: a fine of 150 euros for anyone who does not wear one

With the start of the 2025/26 season, helmets will become mandatory for all skiers in Italy, including adults. Those who do not wear them will be subject to a fine of 150 euros and, in some cases, even revocation of their ski pass. Even though helmets have been king on the ski slopes for several years and almost no one skis without a helmet, this is still an important change, such as when in 2000 helmets became mandatory even for adults riding scooters. On the snow-covered slopes of Val Senales, at 3,200 meters above sea level, people have been skiing for two weeks and the comments there have been overwhelmingly positive: a chorus of yes to ski helmets.

From chic models to retro ones

“This is an important choice,” he explained Barbara Milaninational ski instructor for more than 20 years in Val Senales, “I have been using it for many years. It is now part of me. I don’t take turns quickly if I don’t have a helmet. But I don’t even stop on the slopes if I don’t have a helmet, because that is the sense of security I have, both towards myself and towards others”. It is also worth saying that in recent years helmets have become an element of fashion, a must for those who want to look truly chic. There are futuristic models with a glass visor and a little retro, there are those who prefer metallic colors and there are those who prefer matte colors, there is something for every taste.

“Helmets save lives”

Ski instructors also agree Stefano Zerpeloni: “Ski schools and ski instructors in Italy welcome the fact that helmets should be worn on the slopes by everyone, even adults, because helmets are naturally life-saving and useful.” Even installers say they are happy with the introduction of the new rules. “We work and do everything to ensure safety on the slopes,” added STefan BetterAlpin Arena Senales marketing manager.

Insurance, alcohol, overtaking

In addition, since 2023, other provisions have come into force in Alto Adige, in addition to the obligation to have insurance and limits on alcohol consumption: two years ago the Provincial Council of Bolzano decided that overtaking on the track is only permitted if there is sufficient space and visibility, and at such a distance that it does not obstruct those being overtaken. Near intersections you should also pay attention to other users coming from other slopes, and climbing the slopes is prohibited.
