An American aerial bomb at Nuremberg was defused at night. The city government announced this at 03.30. It took three explosives experts about an hour to defuse the unexploded bomb.
The bomb was removed after it was defused and residents were allowed to return to their homes and apartments. Massive evacuations had previously been carried out.
Road closures within an 800 meter radius are required during the evacuation. Up to 21,000 residents had to leave their apartments and houses. It was the largest evacuation operation to date required in Nuremberg following the discovery of a World War II bomb.
In the afternoon, small teams went from house to house. According to the city, they informed residents that they had to leave their homes or apartments due to the discovery of a bomb. If the house or apartment is empty, the door is marked, for example with tape. The bomb, which weighs around 450 kilograms, was discovered on Avenariusstrasse in the Großreuth district during construction work.
Hundreds of emergency services on site
Police have closed the first roads in the affected area from 7.30pm. Vehicles with loudspeakers passed through the area to provide information to residents.
Shuttle buses took those affected to the school center on Berliner Platz, where a treatment center was being set up. Emergency services also asked residents to leave their apartments first if possible and stay with relatives or friends.
According to the city government, bomb experts and hundreds of emergency services were at the scene during the night: a total of almost 500 firefighters, around 250 helpers from the emergency services, 60 THW staff and more than 100 police officers.
