There are no signs yet that the level of conflict between Donald Trump and the BBC will subside, British TV which was in the spotlight of the tycoon because it broadcast one of his videos with cuts and modifications to change its meaning on January 6 2021, the day of the attack on Capitol Hill. The resignations of Director General Tim Davie and Head of BBC News, Deborah Turness, are not enough. Now the reason for the dispute is the request for billions of dollars in compensation made by Trump and the official apology made by the network which also embarrassed British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The TV channel officially apologized, but denied any intention to defame and therefore rejected the request for compensation. However, because the BBC de facto means the government, this case is also distorted. The leader of the liberal democratic opposition, Ed Davey, challenged Starmer to stage a public intervention against his big overseas ally to press for the withdrawal of a billion-dollar lawsuit threatened in a Florida court against the broadcaster. “A national institution,” according to Davey.
In the apology communication, sent directly to Trump and his legal team, it was acknowledged that the speech was created through editing of two separate sections, which “incorrectly” reinforced the feeling that Donald had explicitly incited the attack on Capitol Hill. “Mistakes were committed unintentionally and without intent,” thereby denying billions of dollars in damages. But there are also those in London who argue that the BBC should not have apologized, putting Starmer, whose work building a pivot between Washington and London has been long and complicated, at the center of the conflict.
Meanwhile, according to the Telegraph, there will be a
another damning video that an edition of “Newsnight,” the BBC’s flagship broadcast, contained a similar snippet of Trump’s speech, which was broadcast without anyone telling viewers about the change.
