Jair Bolsonaro is getting closer to prison. The Brazilian Supreme Court officially rejected the former Brazilian President’s appeal on Friday, November 14 after being sentenced to twenty-seven years in prison for the attempted coup. The court decided to reject this appeal on November 7, but has not yet ratified its decision.

The 70-year-old former right-wing leader who served as president from 2019 to 2022, was found guilty in September of being the leader of a country. “criminal organization” after conspiring to ensure his “authoritarian maintenance of power” after the victory of his left-wing rival, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, in the October 2022 elections. According to prosecutors, this plan included the murder of Lula and the Supreme Court judge in charge of the case, Alexandre de Moraes. However, it failed due to lack of support from senior military officials.

In his appeal, the former head of state defended himself “deep injustice”as well as “ambiguity, omission, contradiction” trial, demanding a reduced sentence, questions the form rather than the substance of the case.

Judge Moraes rejected the request, noting that the trial highlighted Jair Bolsonaro’s central role in the coup attempt. He also reiterated his role as the instigator of the events of January 8 2023, when hundreds of his supporters stormed government buildings in Brasilia.

Under house arrest since August, Jair Bolsonaro could be jailed during the last week of November. Due to the skin cancer he suffers from and the resulting stab wound to the stomach in 2018, he can ask the Court to let him serve his sentence at home, as happened with former president Fernando Collor de Mello (1990-1992), who was sentenced to eight years in prison for corruption.
