The first known case of infection with the H5n5 variant of the bird flu virus in humans. An elderly man with comorbidities has been hospitalized in Washington state, federal health authorities said. This is an infection associated with a different type of virus than that found in previous infections.
“The H5N5 strain – explained virologist Fabrizio Pregliasco to Adnkronos Health – has been seen in animals since 2020 in various countries.
Pregliasco, however, invites us to see the glass as half full. “In a positive sense, we observe, also in this case, a good ability, at the moment, to identify these variants. In addition to this first isolation, at this time, it is important to carry out systematic monitoring.”
