At least 120 people were injured in anti-government protests against violent crime in Mexico in the capital, Mexico City. The head of the city’s security authority, Pablo Vázquez, said on Saturday that 100 police officers and 20 demonstrators were injured. 20 people were arrested.

Thousands of people demonstrated on Saturday against violent crime in Mexico and President Claudia Sheinbaum’s security policies. In front of the government palace, some protesters tore down metal barriers and threw projectiles at police. The officers used tear gas, as a journalist from the AFP news agency reported.

Protests after mayor’s assassination

The background to these protests is violence in Mexico, caused in particular by drug cartels. Most recently, the murder of the mayor of the city of Uruapan in the state of Michoacán, Carlos Manzo, caused outrage. Manzo is known for his fight against drug gangs.

Michoacán has been plagued by organized crime-related violence for years. Drug gangs such as the Jalisco Nueva Generación and La Nueva Familia Michoacana cartels are active in the state.

At Saturday’s demonstration in Mexico City, some people wore hats like the one Mayor Manzo wore. Protesters also carried placards reading “We are all Carlos Manzo”. Generation Z representatives called for a protest.
