Aviation tax: Union urges airlines to lower prices – “Then next summer holidays will be cheaper”

The union has asked airlines to lower ticket prices before the coalition implements air traffic tax cuts. “It is best to lower prices before the tax cut on July 1 2026,” the deputy head of the Union parliamentary group for transport, Stephan Stracke (CSU), told “Bild am Sonntag”. “Then next summer vacation will be cheaper.”

Not only does this bode well for families who rely on summer vacations, but it will also “boost” air traffic, Stracke said. “I hope Lufthansa specifically reviews its flight offerings and cancels the canceled connecting flights.”

If taxes and fees for airlines fall, passengers will also benefit from it, the transport politician continued. “Ticket prices must be reduced. I now expect that from airlines, especially Lufthansa.”

The coalition on Thursday agreed with its coalition committee to reduce aviation taxes on July 1, 2026. According to Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), this will provide relief worth 350 million euros. The Green Party and the Left Party strongly criticized the move.
