“Giorgian majority faces European turning point: courage needed on environmental and migrant issues”

Carlo Fidanza, MEP and head of the Fdi delegation in the European Parliament, captures the state of agreement in the EU between popular, conservative and sovereign groups.

Dear, from the polls of the last few days, a center-right majority in Europe emerges: is this confirmation of the so-called “Giorgian majority”?

“We promised that we would work to build a center-right majority, acting as a link between the EPP and groups on the right, in particular to change the green folly that was born in the last legislature. On Thursday we showed clearly that this is the only way to achieve the much-desired simplification, because the left is the enemy of the corporate world. This is the Meloni model, or rather the Giorgian majority that is being imitated at European level.”

Recent polls show that the EPP is favoring the centre-right: will this trend last?

I hope they are convinced of this. I expected more courage from the EPP on the Climate bill which introduces a new target of 90% emissions reduction by 2040: another blow to businesses and citizens. Despite opposition from colleagues from Forza Italia and other popular Polish, French and Spanish groups, the EPP has largely acted as a supporter of the left, weakening the negotiated text with the determination of our government. There is no more time to waste, if we want to avoid industrial desertification of the region. Europe”.

Can the majority seen in due diligence also be used in future immigration documents?

“This is urgently needed. Basic measures will be approved by the assembly, such as the European safe countries list and repatriation rules, which are opposed by left-wing immigration groups and the only possibility of a right-wing majority.”

After the votes on the environment and competitiveness, could the PPEECRPatrioti alliance also lead a revision of the Green Deal?

On 10 December the EU Commission will present a revised regulation banning diesel and petrol cars from 2035. We have always fought against an all-electric solution and technological neutrality: biofuels and all technologies that reduce emissions must be accepted. If we win this fight, we will save the internal combustion engine, the SMEs involved, and tens of thousands of jobs.”

In the recent vote, Hungary played a decisive role: how can relations with Orbán fit into the new majority, especially on the Ukrainian front?

“We have to separate the plans. In the spring there will be a vote in Hungary and Orbán will be challenged by a centrist candidate from the EPP. We hope that he can be confirmed because Hungary in the Council of the European Union often supports Italy’s position. However, in the meantime, in Parliament we must have the ability to add to the voices of parties that hate each other at home to try to save Europe from decline. Meanwhile in Ukraine, Hungary’s position is not ours, even if we have to take into account Budapest’s position and energy dependence on Russia.”

Can we say that the votes of the last few days mark the beginning of a more pragmatic and less ideological line in Europe?

“That is our hope and goal. Giorgia Meloni is the only true, solid and credible leader, she is the beacon of this new Europe.”

Meanwhile, farmers are threatening sensational protests in Brussels against funding cuts to the sector.

“And they are right! The whole world supports agriculture because today food security is national security

The EU is actually doing the opposite by weakening our producers, and leaving them exposed to massive imports from outside the EU without the slightest reciprocal rules and standards. We will continue to fight against these unacceptable choices.”
