An 81-year-old woman was found dead yesterday afternoon at her home in via Pezza di Mesenzana, a town in the province of Varese not far from Luino, suffered from multiple stab wounds by her husband, Renato Bianchi, 78 years old. The victim’s name was Mariella Chiari. She died instantly, when 118 personnel arrived at the location there was nothing more they could do about the old woman.
These concerns were raised by relatives who live on the ground floor of the same semi-detached house as the scene of the crime. On the first floor there is an elderly couple, on the ground floor there is a daughter and three grandchildren. It was a young granddaughter, after seeing her grandfather come downstairs screaming, who understood what was happening and called 112. Unfortunately it was too late.
When Luino police arrived, they could do nothing but stop the man and take him to the barracks for interrogation. He was the one who attacked his wife in the living room by hitting her chest with a kitchen knife in the middle of an argument for trivial reasons. The police later found the weapon attached to the woman’s body. After being questioned, the 78 year old man was thrown into prison. However, the body was transferred on the orders of the judicial authorities to the Institute of Forensic Medicine of Varese hospital for an autopsy.
Currently, the reasons that prompted the husband to carry out this movement are not yet known. Previously, there had never been any recorded episodes of violence committed by the 78-year-old man, so the motive for killing the woman was not clear. The area of the crime was isolated and investigators carried out all checks necessary for the investigation and listened to family members and acquaintances to try to understand what prompted Bianchi to grab a kitchen knife and attack the 81-year-old man. This husband and wife are not originally from Mesenzana, they moved several years ago to be close to their daughter and grandchildren. “A very quiet but honorable family, we really can’t imagine what could have happened”, commented Mayor Alberto Rossi.
The same street as the city, located between the lakes
Maggiore and Lake Lugano, have been the locations of other dramatic bloody events. In March 2023 Andrea Rossin stabbed to death her two children Giada and Alessio, aged 13 and 7, before committing suicide.
