NATO’s challenge to Russia

If there is any specificity of the Alsatian detachment 6eequipment regiment (6eRMat), these are the two lines that connect it to the civil railway network. LThe soldiers of the unit located in Gresswiller, a town of 1,700 inhabitants in Bas-Rhin, which specializes in supporting operations, also named themselves “quai de la Voie-Sacree”. A tribute to the vital logistical axis that, during the Battle of Verdun in 1916, enabled the transport of soldiers, ammunition and supplies. Behind the railroad tracks, mechanics, technicians and logisticians bustled about in huge hangars where equipment was stored, ready to be tested, repaired and then shipped to French troops. A kind of Amazonian army, where convoys can enter or exit thanks to two portals that open to the SNCF rails.

This connection to the civil railway network is a valuable asset. Since 2022, the General Staff has learned lessons from the war in Ukraine, in particular the failure of Russia’s blitzkrieg in Kiev, linked to fuel supply failures. Faced with the prospect of Moscow’s military push beyond Ukraine, into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), having an effective logistical support chain to send troops to Europe’s eastern flank has once again become one of the priorities.
