LA TRIBUNE SUNDAY — Operation Tobacco Free Month, which ended November 30, celebrates its 10th anniversaryethis year’s edition. In the context of a decline in the number of smokers, how has the number of participants changed?
CAROLINE SEMAILLE — Tobacco Free Month is an annual event which in its ten editions has mobilized more than 1.5 million participants. Since 2016, the number of registrants has changed significantly, ranging from 112,000 to 242,000 depending on the edition. These variations reflect not only enthusiasm for the challenge, but also the vagaries of the social context. For example, during the Covid-19 pandemic, lockdowns limited our ability to fully implement the system, resulting in a decrease in enrollment. However, it is important to emphasize that these numbers only reflect part of the reality: many smokers accepted the challenge without signing up, perhaps driven by the collective momentum and media visibility of the operation. This decade-long mobilization has helped make No Tobacco Month a major driver for reducing smoking in France.
