Ukraine will import gas from Greece to meet its winter needs, Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Sunday, November 16, while the country’s gas infrastructure was targeted by Russian attacks. In October, Moscow launched its biggest bombing campaign against Ukrainian gas sites since the invasion began in 2022, disrupting 60% of production, the main source of fuel for heating.
“We have prepared an agreement with Greece regarding gas supplies to Ukraine”the Ukrainian leader said on social networks. He said Kyiv had also completed financial agreements to cover this “almost 2 billion euros” gas imports, intended to compensate for production losses resulting from the Russian attack. The amounts came from the Ukrainian government, European banks under guarantee of the European Commission, Ukrainian and Norwegian banks. In addition to his allies in Europe and America, Volodymyr Zelensky said he was making efforts “active with Azerbaijan”with whom he hopes to conclude “long term contract” for gas imports.
The declaration came at the start of the Ukrainian president’s visit to Europe, which begins with Greece on Sunday, and will also pass through France on Monday.
