Alice Wong, the writer and activist, born with muscular dystrophy and a symbol of disability rights, has died. Wong was 51 years old and died Friday in a San Francisco hospital from an infection, said Sandy Ho, a close friend of the family, The Guardian reported.
Ho calls his friend a “disability justice movement figure” who wants to see a world where people with disabilities, especially those from marginalized groups such as LGBTQ+ and immigrants, can live freely and have full autonomy over their lives and decisions. As the daughter of immigrants from Hong Kong, Wong tells her personal story – growing up with a neuromuscular disease, finding herself and her activism – and how US policies and systems fail people with disabilities, queer people and immigrants. He used an electric wheelchair, a breathing apparatus and described himself – recalled the media – as a “disabled cyborg”.
