«In a remote village near Santa Marinella… Fifteen». It was July 5, 1983 – Emanuela Orlandi He had been missing for two weeks – when the telephone rang at his parents’ house: the fifteen-year-old’s uncle, Mario Meneguzzi, answered, and a girl’s voice was heard on the other end of the line. The voice is flat and monotonous, revealing no emotion, as if the speaker is in a trance. Last year Pietro Orlandi, for the first time heard “Chi l’ha visto?” part of the recording that was made by his uncle, he recognized his sister’s voice. “Santa Marinella” and the number “15” became the clues that investigators began to follow. In fact, it was in this town on the coast of Lazio that Mario Meneguzzi (now deceased) had the house where he spent his summers: at via Ecletina 15. The surname “Meneguzzi-Orlandi” still appears on a plaque attached to the wall of the building.
The mystery about Emanuela Orlandi
Well, the program “The State of Things” hosted by Massimo Giletti has an unpublished document from the Secret Service, cataloged as “Most Secret”, which tells about Meneguzzi’s hijacking carried out in 007’s Santa Marinella. But 4 pages are missing. Why? What is written in the report? And why so far has no one talked about it? “I know that the Rome Prosecutor’s Office has had the documents for two years and was aware that the pages were missing.” The investigation into Orlandi’s abduction was reopened after Vatican justice promoters sent new documents to Capitoline prosecutors. Meneguzzi realized that he was being followed by two men in a car and asked for confirmation from his daughter Monica’s boyfriend, Giulio Gangi, who had recently joined Sisde’s civil secret service. And the 23-year-old cop would give him that confirmation. But there is another mystery to be solved. In the information provided by the Carabinieri at that time, it was stated that Emanuela’s uncle’s home address in Santa Marinella did not have a house number. However, a woman who now lives there revealed in “Lo stato delle cose”, broadcast tonight on Rai3, that the plaque with the number 15 has always been there and that recently she found it on the ground, broken. So why doesn’t this element appear in the information? And because when Meneguzzi was asked about the phone call, he changed “the cards on the table.” In fact, he reports: «Emanuela said these words: “15, off… Santa Marinella”». Instead the address is via Ecletina 15. For him, his nephew “was probably drugged, with an indistinct voice”.
Uncle’s role
From June 23 to July 22, 1983 the uncle answered the telephone at Orlandi’s house, acting as sole mediator with the alleged kidnappers. Regarding the July 5 phone call, he told investigators that a man with a foreign accent – “American” – had made him hear Emanuela’s voice. The Carabinieri at that time followed in Meneguzzi’s footsteps after one of their officers was tipped off by the girlfriend of Natalina Orlandi (Emanuela’s sister) about his uncle’s inappropriate attentions. Two years ago, Natalina clarified: «It was something that happened in 1978, since we were working together (in the Chamber of Deputies, ed.), he made a simple verbal “advance” to me, a small gift, but when he realized that there was no possibility, it all ended there. I was shaken and the first person I spoke to was my girlfriend Andrea, who is now my husband, and then our pastor.” But there are other things that are unclear: Meneguzzi’s alibi, which said he was at his home in Torano, in the Reatino area, on June 22, 1983; and his similarity to the identity of the man seen talking to Emanuela, on the day she disappeared, by a traffic policeman. Coincidence? Another misdirection? Or one that has been overlooked?
