Actor Florian David Fitz from Munich provides a rare insight into his life. Why he calls fame “sweet poison” – and what protects him from it.

Munich actor Florian David Fitz finds clear words for the dark side of fame. “Being famous is a small, sweet poison,” said the 51-year-old in an interview with health magazine “Apotheken Umschau”. In his latest film “No Hit Wonder” he plays a pop star named Daniel who has only one big hit and falls mentally. “It’s like heroin for him. He gets addicted and can’t do anything else,” explains Fitz of his film character, who ends up in a mental institution after a failed suicide attempt.

Fitz himself has developed a clear strategy for dealing with fame. “The only solution was distance. I always kept my distance from it. Like a Protestant altar boy, I said to myself: ‘This hype doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with you personally.’ “This distance keeps me healthy, but also very fun-free,” said the actor. She also has a clear message about loneliness: “Let’s be honest: being famous doesn’t protect you from loneliness.”

Fitz knows the feeling of failure from his own experience. “I once experienced severe exhaustion when auditioning at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin. After that I thought I didn’t want to do theater anymore,” he said. “Failure is a part of life. It’s just a part of life. I tell my kids that too.”

In the film, patients at a clinic end up taking part in a sing-along project. Fitz, who studied acting and singing in Boston, believes in its therapeutic effects. “We rehearsed for the film ourselves. And that’s when it became clear that it wasn’t just a theory. It really happened – singing brought people closer to each other. You could feel how we became a group,” explains the man from Munich.
