In the parliamentary elections that took place this Sunday in conjunction with the parliamentary elections, José Antonio Kast’s Republican Party, which with great expectations enters the run-off with the leftist Jeannette Jara, triumphed in both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. The pact led by him has gone from 15 deputies, which he elected in 2021, to 41, according to the preliminary results that will be refined during the night and morning of this Monday. Together with the traditional right, which obtained 37 seats, together they reach 78 parliamentarians in a chamber of 150, so they have a majority. In the Upper House, however, Kast’s Republicans went from one to seven senators. Together with the traditional right, which reaches 19, they will reach 26 senators out of 50, so the opposition to Gabriel Boric also has a majority.
If Kast wins in the run-off on December 14, he will have a Parliament in his favor. This is not normal: the last time a president obtained a majority in both chambers was during Michelle Bachelet’s first government, in 2006, although he lost it during his term.
The official pact, which constitutes the Socialist Party, the Broad Front or the Communist Party, went from 72 to 60 deputies, that is, it lost 12 seats.
