In Delmenhorst, an apartment was engulfed in flames – a man could only escape onto the balcony. How the fire department freed him.

A 28-year-old man stood on his balcony and called for help – behind him his living room was burning to the ground. Emergency services faced this dramatic incident on Sunday evening on Bachstrasse in Delmenhorst.

At around 18.20, a fire broke out in an apartment on the first floor of the apartment building, the cause of which is still unclear. Firefighters rescued residents from balconies with portable ladders and evacuated the entire building. The 28-year-old man suffered serious injuries and was flown to hospital by helicopter.

The Delmenhorst fire brigade is deployed with 64 emergency services – including professional firefighters and volunteer firefighters Delmenhorst-Stadt and Delmenhorst-Süd. Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to other apartments. No one else was injured.

The entire apartment building has been temporarily declared uninhabitable. The six affected tenants are being accommodated by family members. The location of the fire has been confiscated and the investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing. Police estimate losses at 100,000 euros.
