The Olympics conducted security tests and a thousand police officers arrived in the city

For the Milan-Cortina Games, 944 more police officers will arrive in the city, out of a total of 6,008 members of the police force “assembled” at the various Olympic locations from January 26 to February 23 2026. These are the figures decided last November 13 at an inter-force meeting at the State Police Department in Rome.

The centerpiece of the meeting was the Olympic safety equipment. The “massive” personnel usage figures were communicated by police unions, which asked to be involved in “serious and constructive discussions” regarding extraordinary service conditions. Men and women from the police, carabinieri and financial police will be involved. There will be a total of 3,200 police, divided by strategic locations: Milan 944, Sondrio 591, Trento 361, Belluno 407, Bolzano 357 and Verona 326. The officers will come from the central and territorial offices, they will assume all roles and will take care of all the activities foreseen in this appointment. Following are its functions: surveillance of sensitive locations and targets (690 operatives), public order services (570 from the Mobile Department), operations room (61 officers), area control (105 from the Crime Prevention Department), info-investigation services (17 Mobile Squad investigators and 158 from Digos), road and railway police services (308 and 153 employees of two specialties respectively), canine units, bomb squad, snipers and rope controllers (114 agents in total), skiers (68), scientific police and cyber security services (76 and 13 operators respectively), personality protection services (141 agents), technical-logistics and telecommunications services (109 police), bus driver services (20 agents), activities related to health services (21 agents), air support services (20 specialists), services under the jurisdiction of the Anti-Crime division (14 investigators), international relations activities (10 agents), activities of the Central security operational unit (10 specialists), immigration office and border police services (12 each and 225 agents), anti-drone services (6 specialists), services under the responsibility of the Uopi first intervention operational unit (24 agents), as well as 93 officials and drivers, 5 deputy commissioners and drivers.

Meanwhile, on Saturday evening, at around one in the afternoon, a civil protection drill was launched coordinated by the Prefecture, in cooperation with the police, firefighters and State Railways. The simulation takes place in the Passante tunnel between Dateo and Porta Vittoria stations. This was a “very complex emergency” scenario: the convoy stalled, a fire broke out, about fifty passengers had to be evacuated. Ambulances, medical vehicles, police and firefighters arrived at Via Cena. In just a few minutes, Areu activated an advanced medical post where 24 injured people were simulated (7 red, 12 yellow, 5 green).

The training, which ended at around 4 am, is part of the FS Group’s annual training plan and is part of the Winter Olympics preparation program. The aim is to verify in the field the integrated response capacity between the different forces involved, with protocols, communications and activation times. About fifty participants participated.
