Unpaid fines: French motorists in view of Amsterdam City Hall

Every year, hundreds of thousands of French people travel to Amsterdam, famous for its canals, sometimes by car. But behind this love for the Dutch capital lies a less flattering reality: French motorists are, by far, European champions when it comes to unpaid fines. And the city said stop.

From 1 July 2026, any vehicle registered in a country without a data exchange agreement – including France – will immediately be immobilized with shoes if they do not pay for parking. France is clearly the target: by 2024, more than 6,100 fines, or around twenty fines per day, have been imposed on them. Only 21% have paid their “trim.” A level of disaster that puts French drivers at the top of the list of “bad students”, well ahead of Polish and Hungarian drivers.
