Column by Íñigo Domínguez: Leaks with or without filter | Ideas

Revelations are as old as the world, and the first was terrible: God let Noah know that a universal flood would occur. Since then we have seen it all, and if the courts and the UCO had to dedicate themselves to investigating everything, they would do nothing else. Now, for someone to be reported and even prosecuted is quite surprising. It is so difficult to catch someone that I now remember cases where it was not even attempted. And they were serious, leaks of falsehoods against political opponents. October 2012, before the Catalan elections: The world published that the president of the Generalitat, Artur Mas, was under investigation for possession of money in Switzerland. She came from a bad relationship, it was false, she reported it, it was dismissed because the source, said the judge, was reliable (the PP Ministry of the Interior, with Jorge Fernández Díaz). October 2014, before the Catalan municipal elections: The world published that the mayor of Barcelona, Xavier Trias, of the CiU, was under investigation for holding money in Switzerland. After three days the bank denied it, it was false, it was reported, it was dismissed because the source, said the judge, was serious (even if it was still from the Interior, when the minister said: “The Prosecutor’s Office will refine this for you”). By the way, a newspaper reporter testified ABCJavier Chicote, who said he had the information, but did not publish it because it was dubious and he could not verify it (he was later reported in OkDiary: “This is the journalist (Yes) who lent a hand to the corrupt Trias in the trial against his Swiss account.” May 2016, OkDiary published that Pablo Iglesias, leader of Podemos, had money in the Grenadines. It was false, he reported it, it was dismissed and he was sentenced to costs (30 thousand euros). As if to put you on the spot to report him and let him find out who leaked it.

On the other hand, the trial against the state attorney general seeks those who leaked something true, after another lie through the usual channels. We have almost forgotten the origin of it all: a man who is caught for a 350,000 euro fraud, after having earned 2 million commissions selling masks during the pandemic, and who then buys a luxury apartment where he lives with his partner, the president of the Community of Madrid. Everything that comes after is fireworks. Impressive, yes, they never got that far. But we live in exceptional times, a true dictatorship, as we know. It reminded me of another impressive reaction that occurred with the same lady, when in 2022 the president of the PP, Pablo Casado, said: “The question is whether it is understandable that on April 1, when 700 people died in Spain, you can enter into a contract with your sister and receive 286,000 euros in profit from the sale of masks.” You will remember that they killed him. And, how funny, Casado himself had to defend himself from someone who said La Moncloa had leaked it to him.

At least this process helped us see that there are also good journalists. Because you don’t normally see them: almost all those who went to testify are unknown to the public, nor was it known what they looked like. Yes, some were my colleagues. That’s why they were there, because they are the serious ones, the ones who give important news, not nonsense. Journalists are usually thought to be the ones who appear on TV the most, but some remind me of Umbral when they asked him if he had ever broken news in his life: “No, for God’s sake, how horrible.” The others are normal people – José Precedo, Miguel Ángel Campos, José Manuel Romero – who do an extraordinary job and report it only under obligation, to the Supreme Court, because they believe that it is normal to do one’s job well. Even if it seems like it’s not that much.
