The La Cartuja stadium will once again host the Copa del Rey final in 2026, 2027 and 2028. This is the news with which the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) concluded the board of directors meeting in Seville on Monday ahead of the final World Cup qualifying match that Spain and Turkey will play this Tuesday (8.45pm, TVE) in the city.
Home of Real Betis in the current season – and everything suggests that also in the next two due to the renovation works of the Benito Villamarín, the usual green and white fiefdom -, La Cartuja will host the next cup final on April 25th, the big Saturday of the Seville Fair. The coincidence, which has never occurred since the Andalusian capital began hosting the match in 2020, will force security measures to be multiplied during the last weekend of April. The match is also scheduled a week after Manuel Pellegrini’s team hosts Real Madrid in the 32nd matchday of La Liga.
Located on the outskirts of Seville, on the so-called Isla de la Cartuja, where the two arms of the Guadalquivir surround part of the city, La Cartuja has been the venue for the last six Copa del Rey finals. In them, FC Barcelona (2025, against Real Madrid), Athletic Club (2024, against RCD Mallorca), Real Madrid (2023, against CA Osasuna), Real Betis (2022, against Valencia), FC Barcelona (2021, against Athletic Club) and Real Sociedad (2020, against Athletic Club) have won the title.
It was precisely this last one, the final between Basque clubs in 2020, with which the RFEF inaugurated a new custom: establishing a stadium as a fixed venue for the final of the cup competition. The contractual relationship with La Cartuja, however, expired after the final between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona in 2025, so the federative body chaired by Rafael Louzán was forced to find a new venue for the final starting next year.
