The UN Security Council adopts a resolution regarding Trump’s Gaza peace plan
The UN Security Council voted in favor of US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan on Monday. Of the total 15 members, 13 members supported the resolution, which in addition to establishing an interim government for the Palestinian territories, also provides international stabilization powers. The possibility of a future Palestinian state is also mentioned in the draft.
The draft resolution was introduced by the United States and several other countries, including mediators Gaza, Qatar and Egypt. The US welcomed the results of the vote as “historic and constructive”.
Russia and China abstained from the vote and there was no veto. The UN veto, Russia, has put forward its own design.
Last week America warned of risks if its draft resolution was not adopted. “Efforts to sow discord while actively seeking agreement on this resolution have serious, real and entirely avoidable consequences for the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip,” said a spokesperson for the US Mission to the UN. The ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas is “fragile”.
