Traffic: Risk of accidents involving trucks? ADAC warns of too few parking spaces

According to estimates, a lack of truck parking on highways in the southwest could also be a problem ADAC cause dangerous situations. The association inspected twelve rest areas along the country’s A5, A6, A7 and A8 motorways and randomly counted parking violations there.

The results: In nine of the twelve spaces, they found trucks parked in restricted areas – for example in car areas or in areas where parking is strictly prohibited. Throughout these spaces, trucks are parked in lanes between truck parking spaces. And several times testers also encountered trucks parked in critical entrance or exit areas or even on the shoulder of the highway – where illegal parking in particular increases the risk of accidents for all road users.

Not a representative survey

Testers counted parking violations three times per location – on busy weekdays Tuesday or Wednesday, 10 p.m., 11 p.m., and 11 p.m. and midnight. This survey is not statistically representative.

A similar picture is emerging nationally. ADAC also emphasized that it was not a lack of consideration when truck drivers parked incorrectly, but rather a lack of parking space. “There is an urgent need to take action to increase truck parking capacity on the highway,” said Holger Bach, chief Traffic & Environment at ADAC Württemberg. A short-term step is the use of smart technology so that more trucks can be accommodated in existing facilities.
