Albares estimates that Spain will contribute 1,000 million to Ukraine for the purchase of weapons

Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to the sovereignty, freedom and territorial integrity of Ukraine and announced that Spain will contribute 1,000 million euros to the purchase of military equipment from the United States for use in Ukraine, to which will be added expenditure for other types of equipment, such as generators to alleviate Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure before the arrival of winter.

“Spain maintains a long-term commitment to the sovereignty and defense of Ukraine and will maintain it as long as the war lasts,” Albares began in an interview with RNE. When asked about the size of this commitment, the minister said that last year Spain contributed 1 billion to Ukraine for the purchase of military equipment and that this year “something similar” is expected. Furthermore, he recalled that, in addition to these amounts for weapons, Spain provides other types of aid, in addition to welcoming 250,000 Ukrainian refugees, including 40,000 children, and supporting both Kiev’s entry into the EU and the creation of a special court to try Russians responsible for the crime of aggression.

The minister is confident that Sumar, PSOE’s partner in the government coalition and traditionally reluctant to spend on weapons, will not oppose this military aid to Kiev. “The whole government is united for peace in Ukraine and Europe, the whole government is aware that many things are at stake in Ukraine: its sovereignty and its freedom, but also human rights, international law and international humanitarian law.”
