A an eight-year-old boy was found dead in a house in Calimera, in the province of Lecce. His death may have been traumatic. Shortly before, a woman, the child’s mother, was found in the sea by a diver. The police are investigating the facts.

“The last few hours have been a shock to our community,” Mayor Gianluca Tommasi wrote on Facebook. “The tragedies that have befallen us, the discovery of the body of one of our fellow citizens at sea and, shortly after, the body of his son in their home, represent enormous pain and are difficult to comprehend. In this difficult moment, I would like to express, on behalf of myself and the entire Government, the most sincere closeness to the family and everyone who knew and loved these two shattered lives. Special thoughts go to the children and young people of our country, who more than anyone else are at risk of being affected by fear and confusion.”

“As a community, we have an obligation to protect them, accompanying them with attention and appropriate language, without exposing them to information or comments that could cause further anxiety,” he added. Then he asked to make room for police work, “to avoid the spread of rumours, assumptions or unverified reconstructions, which only risk adding to confusion and suffering. Today we must remain united, more than ever. Let us gather in silence, in closeness and mutual respect. Our community has always been able to react with dignity in the most difficult moments, and this time too we will be able to do it, together”.
