Five foreign tourists died while hiking in Torres del Paine National Park, Chile. Two Germans, two Mexicans and one British citizen died in the crash, the government representative in Magallanes province, José Antonio Ruiz, said on television channel T13.
The crash site was difficult to reach because of heavy snowfall, Ruiz said. According to the government, wind speeds of up to 190 kilometers per hour sometimes occur. At the southern end Chile Spring has just begun.
The President promised support to the families of the victims
“I express my deepest condolences to the families, friends and relatives of the five people of Mexican, German and British nationality who lost their lives in the tragedy in Torres del Paine,” President Gabriel Boric wrote on the X news platform. “Rest assured that you can count on the full support of the Chilean authorities and institutions in these difficult times.”
Torres del Paine is one of Chile’s most famous national parks and has been recognized as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO since 1978. The three needle-shaped granite mountains in the center of the park, which are about 2,700 meters high, are especially famous. According to official figures, around 600,000 tourists visit the region every year.
