European justice rejects Amazon’s appeal for having no obligations as it is a large digital platform | Technology

Amazon is one of the main players in the world of digital services in the EU and, therefore, cannot escape the obligations that these companies have. The EU Court had rejected the appeal of the American technology giant, in particular Amazon Store, against Brussels’ decision to designate it as a “large digital platform” (VLPO) in 2023 for violating freedom of business. The Luxembourg judges, with an appealable ruling, rejected the argument of the company led by Jeff Bezos.

The Court accepts, as Amazon states, that the obligations arising from being designated as a large platform under the Digital Services Act “certainly constitute an interference with that freedom, as they may generate significant costs, influence the organization of activities and require complex technical solutions”. But the judges conclude that these obligations “are justified in accordance with the Charter of Fundamental Rights”.
