In recent years we’ve had the opportunity to try out the Chinese company’s smartwatches on various occasions, and if there’s a common thread that ties them all together, it’s Huawei’s build quality and attention to detail, which we think is further enhanced in the Watch GT range of products. With its latest iteration, which was launched on the market at the end of September, Huawei further confirms everything and, before discussing the details, we can already anticipate the experience with the product. Huawei Watch GT6 Pro – a model that the author has owned since shortly before its launch – gives a mostly positive impression.
With the GT6 Pro, Huawei expands on the design of the previous model while maintaining the appearance reminiscent of the traditional chronograph that is the hallmark of the series. There aerospace grade titanium case With an octagonal base, it is half a millimeter more compact than the previous generation of smartwatches but remains integrated larger 1.47″ screen (1.43″ on the GT5 Pro) also thanks to the use of a thinner octagonal bezel, which appears almost vertical. The GT6 Pro is available in three colors Titanium, Black and Brown, each with a different type of strap included in the box; The model we tried was the Black variant which comes with a fluoroelastomer strap which has proven to be quite comfortable in recent months even when worn on the wrist for days.
One thing that has always impressed us positively about Huawei’s Watch GT “Pro” (but also about the company’s other smartwatches) is battery life, and in this case The GT6 Pro is further confirmation of the Chinese brand’s ability to optimize consumption of its wearable devices. The manufacturer in the product sheet promises a lifespan of up to 21 days with light use, up to 12 days with regular use and 7 days with the display in Always On mode; during our testing, we replaced the initial period with an always-on display where we easily achieved an entire week of use, while we were successful in the next two charges it reached 13 and 15 days respectively while keeping all monitoring active (including sleep), and activity background detection, doing some outdoor activities, such as a recent walk between buildings in Vienna – while we tested the cameras of several smartphones for future review – lasted more than 2 hours with real-time position tracking on.
In the new Watch GT6 Pro, the manufacturer has also integrated an advanced version of the TruSense monitoring system, which expands its parameters it can track by monitoring for example heart rate, blood oxygenation (SpO2), heart rate variability, sleep quality, emotions and stress. Paired with the Huawei Health application running on a smartphone, the collected data can be viewed and receive suggestions to improve it if the value is not good; for example, for those who, like the author, tend to sleep poorly, the application gives an indication of where to pay more attention to sleep better, also offering the possibility of playing sounds that help you sleep.
From the health side, the Huawei Watch GT6 Pro, like the previous model, is also integrated “ECG” function that allows you to obtain traces similar to those produced by an electrocardiogram to check or monitor potential arrhythmias, but with a slight evolution: Huawei’s new smartwatch does not rely solely on sensors on the wrist, but integrates electrodes on the secondary side button, which requires you to keep your finger on it to get better measurement precision.
New Huawei Watch GT6 Pro integrates more than 100 sports modes (including aquatic ones, thanks to resistance up to 5atm), sees further improvements in those dedicated to golf and cycling, the latter with the addition of virtual measurement of pedaling power; Since the author is not in top physical condition, we were not able to try many of them in detail, but we concentrated on methods related to walking both outdoors and indoors.
Huawei’s software on this side maintains the excellent “feel” already seen in existing versions on other devices from the manufacturer, with simple and intuitive interface that allows you to start your business easily – but the smartwatch can also detect it itself, for example after a few minutes of fast steps it can offer you to start walking mode also offering the data detected in the minutes before activation -, and from the watch display you can move from one data screen to the next with a simple swipe, keeping the ones that interest you most at first glance; During activities, smart watches periodically communicate data, for example the distance traveled and the time needed.
While using the “outdoor walking” system both at Versailles, on the occasion of the product launch, and in Vienna a few weeks ago, we had the opportunity to appreciate satellite tracking accuracy, even when moving through narrow streets and tall buildings.
Overall, as mentioned at the start, our experience with the Huawei GT6 Pro was largely positive, the device combines an elegant and sporty design with a sturdy system both for sports lovers and for use in everyday life and, above all, it guarantees a battery life that allows you to keep it on your wrist constantly (also IP69 certified), using on-board sensors to monitor your health, without having to charge it every night
