Domenico Mugnaini, director of Toscana Oggi, has died at the age of 65

Journalist Domenico Mugnaini, director of Toscana Oggi, died today at his home in Florence. He was 65 years old and had been battling the disease for some time. Next to him are his wife Barbara and sons Andrea and Giovanni.

Since September 2019 he has headed the Tuscan diocesan weekly magazine, with which he began to take his first steps in journalism at a very young age. Correspondent of “Il Popolo” from 1987 to 1994, collaborator of “Avvenire”, Mugnaini was an intern at “La Gazzetta di Firenze” between 1989 and 1991. In 1990 he started collaborating with the Asca agency.

After collaborating with Gr2 Rai, from 1993 to 1999 he was editor-in-chief of Cecchi Gori Comunications, leading the journalistic editorial team of Canale 10. From 1999 to 2002 he worked at the press office of the Municipality of Florence; in 2002 he became editor of the Asca agency in Florence. In 2004 he joined Ansa’s Florence office as editor, and in 2018 he was appointed deputy head of services. During his years at Asca and later at Ansa, he mainly dealt with politics and economics, in addition to major crimes and judicial investigations, such as the trial of the Monster of Florence, the Georgofili massacre, the wreck of the Costa Concordia and most importantly, since 1990, the events related to the Monte dei Paschi bank.

In 2015 Mugnaini managed the press office for Pope Francis’ visit to Florence, collaborating in organizing events marking Florentine life and the life of the Italian Church. Since 2017 he has been on the Board of Directors of the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore; from April 2019 to June 2022 he was a member of the board of the Florence School of Sacred Arts. In 2019 he returned to Toscana Oggi, which he directed with rigor and precision right to the end, leaving his mark on the weekly. He has also been an advisor to Fisc, the federation that unites Italian Catholic weeklies. In 2023 he received the Pirovano-Liverani journalistic award, organized by the Pro-Life Movement “for his commitment to defending life”.
