Rome, 19 November (Adnkronos) – “Consent must be free, current and effective: not simulated, not flawed and always contextual to one’s behavior. This is now an indispensable reform to truly protect the freedom of one’s self-determination”. Therefore, Carolina Varchi, leader of the Italian Brothers group in the Judiciary Commission and rapporteur of the sexual violence law today approved it unanimously in the Assembly.
“The new rules – he continued – provide clarity in a complex area, adapting them to the Istanbul Convention and to the now prevalent jurisprudence that prioritizes consent, overcoming old approaches, eliminating interpretative doubts and reducing excessive discretion. We follow the evolution of sexual behavior by placing a person’s freedom at the center. We want to avoid difficult-to-understand sentences that in the past gave the sensation of leaving sexual violence unpunished.”
“Today, Parliament has demonstrated good institutional practice, choosing to let what unites prevail over what divides. This is an important signal in a season of reform that requires responsibility and common sense from everyone. As demonstrated by President Meloni, whom I thank for personally following the process of such provisions, the Italian Brothers and the majority are always ready to collaborate on legislation to defend freedom and reforms that are not tinged with ideological prejudice,” he concluded.
